Why the consumer unit matters when installing an EV charger
An EV charger is a substantial electrical load, so it cannot simply be connected wherever there is space in your existing installation. The supply must be assessed as a complete system: the incoming supply, consumer unit, earthing arrangement, safety devices, existing circuits and the charger itself all need to work together safely.
That is why the answer depends on your property rather than just the charger model. Two homes in Oxford can have very different electrical arrangements, even if both owners want the same style of home charging point.

Older installations need a closer look
In an older property, the consumer unit may contain outdated safety devices, limited spare capacity or an arrangement that was suitable for the electrical demands of the time but not for adding an EV charger. There may also be previous alterations that are not obvious from looking at the board alone.
The important issue is not simply whether a space for another circuit is available. A charger normally requires its own separately protected electrical connection, and the protection must be appropriate for the equipment being installed. We also need to consider the condition of the existing wiring and whether the earthing and bonding arrangements (safety connections that help reduce the risk of electric shock) are suitable.
If the consumer unit cannot provide the required protection, an upgrade may be the most straightforward way to create a safe, clearly organised installation. In some homes, electrical repair or improvement work may be needed before the charger can be connected.
Newer homes are not automatically ready
A relatively modern property may have a newer consumer unit, but that does not guarantee that it can accept every charging arrangement. The available supply still has to be considered alongside the demands already placed on the property.
Think about what operates at the same time: electric heating, an induction hob, an electric shower, a heat pump, solar equipment, battery storage or other high-load appliances can all affect the available capacity. The charger may be technically compatible with the car but unsuitable to run at its full output continuously without further control.
This is where load management can be useful. Instead of allowing the charger to draw its maximum demand regardless of what else is running, a suitable system can regulate charging around the property’s available capacity. That may reduce the need for more capacity from the incoming supply, but it still needs to be designed and installed correctly.
The incoming supply can be the limiting factor
The consumer unit is only one part of the route from the electricity network to your car. If the incoming supply and connection from the electricity network cannot support the combined demand, changing the consumer unit alone will not solve the problem.
During a survey, we look at the supply capacity and the way electricity is distributed through the property. We then consider whether the practical solution is a different charger setting, load management, a consumer unit upgrade or further work involving the supply. The right choice depends on the installation in front of us, not on a generic rule applied to every home.
This is particularly important where more than one vehicle may charge at the property, or where the charger will be used alongside several high-demand appliances. Planning for actual use is better than selecting equipment based only on its advertised maximum output.
Parking position changes the installation too
The distance between the consumer unit and the parking space affects more than the appearance of the cable route. A longer route can pass through different parts of the building, require additional protection against mechanical damage and create more decisions around access and cable protection.
Where parking is away from the house, the cable route may need to pass externally or through outbuildings. The construction of walls, the position of existing services and the route into the charger location all influence how the dedicated circuit is installed. A suitable consumer unit may still require careful design to keep the installation secure, accessible and tidy.
What you should expect from a proper assessment
We inspect the consumer unit, identify the existing safety devices, assess the incoming supply and consider the circuits already serving your home. We also discuss how you intend to charge, where the vehicle will be parked and whether other high-load equipment is in use.
From there, we can explain why an upgrade is or is not recommended. If load management is appropriate, we explain what it does and what it means for charging behaviour. If additional electrical work is needed, the implications should be clear before installation begins.
