How Often Should an EV Charger Be Serviced?

An EV charger can continue to start and stop a charge while a fault is developing. That makes service timing less about waiting for a complete failure and more about recognising what may be wearing or behaving differently.

For a useful interval, start with the maintenance guidance for your charger, then consider how it is installed and used. A charger in regular use, or one exposed to knocks and cable strain, may need attention sooner if you notice a change. A fixed calendar interval cannot account for every property or charger.

What can go wrong inside the charging setup?

The charger is only one part of the arrangement. The charging cable, connector, electrical supply and the vehicle all affect whether charging starts and continues normally. A symptom at the charger does not always mean the charger itself has failed.

Repeated handling can put strain on the cable and the point where it meets the unit. A cable that is pulled tight, trapped or regularly knocked may become damaged. The connector can also collect dirt or suffer impact. Damage or contamination can interfere with a dependable connection, so a charge may fail to start or stop unexpectedly.

Electrical faults can be less visible. A connection that has loosened or deteriorated may create heat under load. Safety switches may also trip if they detect an electrical problem. These are not faults to investigate by opening the charger or electrical equipment yourself. They need a qualified person to assess safely.

A charger may also display an error because of an issue elsewhere in the charging setup. If the same vehicle charges elsewhere, or another vehicle behaves differently on your unit, that information can help narrow down where the problem lies. It does not prove which part is at fault, but it is useful to note before arranging an inspection.

Signs that should bring a service forward

Do not wait for a routine appointment if charging becomes intermittent, the unit displays a fault indication, protective devices trip, or you notice physical damage. Unusual heat, a burning smell, crackling sounds or visible scorching are reasons to stop using the charger and seek qualified help. Do not touch damaged wiring or attempt to remove covers.

Pay attention to gradual changes too. A charging plug that no longer connects as it used to, a cable that has become difficult to handle, or charging that repeatedly stops can point to wear or a developing fault. A single failed charge may have another cause, but recurring problems deserve investigation rather than repeated resets.

Note what happened, including any displayed message, whether the fault repeats and whether it affects one vehicle or more than one. If safe to do so, check the vehicle’s charging settings and the manufacturer’s user guidance. Do not dismantle the unit or carry out electrical tests yourself. Clear observations can help an electrician distinguish a charger issue from a vehicle or supply problem.

Use condition, not guesswork, to set the interval

Follow the maintenance advice supplied for your charger as the starting point. Then consider practical factors: how frequently it is used, whether the cable is regularly moved or strained, whether the unit is exposed to accidental knocks, and whether anyone has noticed a change in its operation. A change in use or condition is a reason to review the interval rather than simply relying on the date of the last check.

If the unit is working normally, keep the manufacturer’s guidance available and include the charger in your household’s electrical maintenance planning. If warning signs appear, arrange an assessment sooner. Maintenance is not a substitute for responding to a fault, and a service visit cannot make a damaged unit safe to use before it has been checked.
